Preconvention Workshop A -- New CEO Institute: Hit the Ground Leading

Designed specifically for first-time CEOs, this day-and-a-half workshop covers essential topics that challenge every new leader. Meet with your peers in a learning environment that is supportive and serious, open and honest, productive and informative. Seasoned faculty provide firsthand experiences and insights on topics including developing positive board relations, mastering advocacy, problem solving, fostering the college mission and understanding college finances. Get answers to your most pressing questions and network with both experienced and new leaders. The workshop includes breakfast, lunch, snacks, and materials.
Preconvention Workshop B -- For Aspiring Presidents: Interviewing for the Presidency and Preparing to Work with and for a Board of Trustees

This two-part workshop provides a valuable simulation of the presidential interview process and insights into how community college boards of trustees function. Practice interviewing in a typical presidential candidate/search committee or board interview session; learn how to present yourself in ways that are uniquely yours and capitalize on outstanding qualities that make you the candidate of choice; and critique your videotaped interview with presidential experts. You'll gain valuable information on governance and how to prepare to work for a board of trustees, as well as learn what trustees look for when interviewing presidential candidates.
Preconvention Workshop C -- Show Me the Money: Essential Fundraisisng Tools for Community College Presidents (sponsored by Council for Resource Development)
Date: Saturday, April 9, 8:30 - 4:30 pm
Identifying and sustaining new funding sources is one of the key challenges all college CEOs face. This interactive full-day workshop is exclusively for the fund-raiser-in-chief and will be led by community college presidents with notable success in fund- and friend-raising. It is presented by the Council for Resource Development, an AACC-affiliated council.
Join us for a dynamic peer-to-peer discussion on key topics such as the president’s role in providing visionary leadership, leading the foundation board, strategic planning, developing a compelling case for support, creating the fundraising team and “making the ask.” Receive tool-kit of critical sample resources including gift acceptance, naming and investment policies, endowment and operation agreements and foundation bylaws.
Preconvention Workshop D -- Breaking the Stained Glass Ceiling: Preparing Administrators From Diverse Groups for Executive-Level Positions
(Organized by the Asian/Pacific Islanders Council, National Community College Hispanic Council, and National Council on Black American Affairs)

What does it take to attain a vice presidency or presidency? Are you frustrated that you have been repeatedly screened out of the application and screening processes? Are you questioning your career pathway or professional goals as a chief executive? This highly interactive workshop is designed primarily for administrators from diverse groups who aspire to achieve and be successful in executive level positions or presidencies in community colleges. Prominent CEOS representing the three host Councils will facilitate a workshop that provides:
- A realistic and thought-provoking forum for discussing strategies in making career choices and preparations for next steps;
- Varied perspectives from presidents, vice-presidents, trustees and other community college leaders about careers and career preparation;
- How to navigate through the internal and external politics;
- An inside view of the recruitment process and ways to overcome barriers;
- Solutions that help to balance personal and professional commitments, values, and choices;
- National networking and mentoring opportunities
Preconvention Workshop E -- Leveraging Data in Strategic Planning: Building Institutional Capacity (sponsored by AACC Future Leaders Institute)
Date: Saturday, April 9, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Many institutions have extensive data resources but lack the capacity to apply that data to the challenges of institutional decision-making – an increasingly critical process to.support strategic planning, accreditation, and state policy decisions. This workshop will assist participants in developing and utilizing the institutional research (IR) capacity within their colleges. Outcomes will include:
- Understanding information and data needed for strategic leadership and developing the institution's strategic capability.
- Recognizing the characteristics of sound research, including benchmarking.
- Articulating expectations in operating an effective college IR department.
- Identifying internal and external research resources.
- Insight into the the goals of the Voluntary Framework of Accountability
- Effecting synergy between IT and IR and the benefits of collaboration and interface.
Preconvention Workshop F -- "The Butterfly Effect": Working With a Board of Trustees (sponsored by ACCT)

This workshop is designed for new and experienced presidents who are interested in broadening their understanding of boards of trustees and learning practical approaches to strengthening board partnerships. "The Butterfly Effect" refers to the fact that when a butterfly flaps its wings, it triggers small changes in weather that result in a tsunami across the ocean.
Discover how small changes in procedures, approaches, and relationships can add up to significant changes in the workings of your board. How do you find the right balance between addressing the needs and desires of the board and those of the institution? How do you address the complexity associated with working for and reporting to an appointed or elected group? Review proven best practices to help transform a good board into a great board.
